Tap

Tap dance classes in downtown Halifax

A rhythmic style that blends percussive footwork, syncopation, and musicality with performance-based skills.

About the style

Tap is a rhythmic style where dancers use metal-tipped shoes to create percussion by striking the floor, blending precise footwork, syncopation, and musicality. Tap dancers are performers and musicians at the same time.

Tap classes build from a warm up into rhythm drills and combinations, ranging from graceful soft-shoe to fast, dynamic footwork. No tap shoes yet? Start in sneakers, socks, or bare feet.

What to bring

  • Comfortable, breathable clothing with optional layers for warm-up.
  • Metal-tipped tap shoes. Alternatively, indoor sneakers, socks, or bare feet.
  • Refillable water bottle.
  • Small sweat towel, if desired.

Good to know

Must be 18+ (or 14+ with parental consent) to attend. Please ensure your date of birth is updated on your profile to sign up.

Buying your first pair of tap shoes

You don't necessarily need tap shoes to tap dance. Historically, tap began long before tap shoes were invented! Your feet do all the work, the shoes amplify the sound. Fun fact: a good tap teacher can tell whether your feet are making the sound from the movement alone, whether or not they can actually hear them.

Tap shoes are recommended if you tap on a somewhat regular basis. They protect your feet, support your joints, and let you hear your own sounds more clearly, an important part of the learning process.

Sizing tips:

  • Tap shoes typically run small. We suggest sizing up a half or full size from your street shoe.
  • Shoes stretch as they break in, so make sure they fit snug. They should not be painful, though.
  • Because they stretch over time, we recommend avoiding slip-ons. Laces let you tighten the same pair for longer, and allow some adjustment to the width for comfort.

What type of shoe is best?

  • Tap shoes vary by design, sole structure, and heel height to suit different styles.
  • We recommend starting with a full sole oxford or jazz style shoe, for foot and ankle support.
  • Interested in performing with us in a showcase? Black tap shoes are highly recommended.
