Intro to Dance

KICKSTART YOUR JOURNEY TO BECOMING A STRONGER DANCER.

In a nutshell, each class in this 6-week course focuses on what you need to know to prepare you for any choreography class, regardless of style.

WHAT TO EXPECT

This course is for absolute beginners new to dance, or experienced dancer seeking a stronger foundation. In just 6 lessons, you’ll learn common terminology, practice many universal steps, how to count and feel the music, how to remember and perform choreography, and how to improve your flexibility, and learn the physics of turning. With this new skillset, you’ll be able to take on choreography in any style with more confidence! This course is offered via Group Sessions or Private Lessons. 

Here’s a quick overview of what to expect over the 6 sessions:

Lesson 1: Counting, Isolations, and Body Awareness

To kick off this course, we’ll take you through the basics of feeling and counting music. We’ll then help hone your body awareness and control with a deep dive into the foundations of movement. We’ll work through the different parts of the body from head to toe to help you practice moving each one independently.

Lesson 2: Universal Steps & Freestyle

Pas de bourrée? Jazz Squares? Pliés? Learn universal steps that appear in almost ALL dance choreography – regardless of genre.

Lesson 3: How to Turn & Jump

The physics of turns and jumps almost always confuse new dancers. Learn the basics of some common jumps and turns so you can execute them safely, properly, and with confidence!

Lesson 4: Dynamics & Musicality

We’ll dive deep into Dynamics, exploring the full range of different ways you can execute your movements. You will learn how to modify your movement using the 4 dials of Dynamics (Fluidity, Resistance, Space, and Energy), and apply them to create texture, highlight musicality, and elevate your dancing. 

Lesson 5: Flexibility, Range of Motion, and Floorwork

Learn the difference between stretching to prepare your body for movement (Dynamic Stretching) and stretching to become more flexible (Static and Isometric).

Lesson 6: Retention, Intention, & Storytelling

Intention elevates your performance quality –  it powers the emotional story you are communicating through your dancing. We’ll show you how to use body language, facial expressions, and dynamics to embody any intention within a choreography.
